Google Indexing Problems: A Troubleshooting Guide

Understand why a page is discovered but not indexed, and how to investigate the actual cause.

Search Console statuses describe what Google has observed, but they do not always indicate a fault in the website. A valid page can remain unindexed even when the sitemap, canonical and robots settings are correct. Prioritise pages that deserve to appear in search.

Check the exact URL in Search Console

URL Inspection is more useful than guessing from a site-wide coverage total.

  • Check whether the URL is in Google’s index.
  • Compare the user-declared and Google-selected canonical when available.
  • Review the last crawl, fetch result and indexing permission.

Separate crawl access from indexing choice

A crawlable URL is not guaranteed to be indexed; a robots disallow is also not a substitute for an appropriate noindex directive.

  • Confirm HTTP 200 for valid public content.
  • Remove accidental noindex directives from chosen public pages.
  • Keep login and customer-only pages excluded intentionally.

Improve discovery and usefulness

Make important pages easier to discover through relevant site links and ensure each page is meaningfully different.

  • Link to new pages from an appropriate hub or tool directory.
  • Review near-duplicate, empty and largely templated content.
  • Submit a clean sitemap with canonical public URLs.

Verify after the change

Google does not recrawl and index every changed page instantly.

  • Request reindexing for a limited number of genuinely important corrected URLs.
  • Monitor the Pages and Performance reports for changes.
  • Avoid repeated requests as a substitute for fixing content or access issues.

What the audit can and cannot tell you

A scanner can detect signs of issues and provide evidence, but it cannot guarantee Google rankings, determine every search intent or replace a careful review of the live site. Confirm any changes in Search Console and recheck the affected pages after editing.
